We have an inkling some great art is going to happen...
OUR APPROACH
We have a commitment to providing authentic arts experiences for children, and adults, and strive to build skills in a supportive, caring environment. Quality artist’s tools and materials are used in all of our workshops. Our class sizes are small so that everyone can feel comfortable and receive guidance from our Artists.
Everyone is an artist
We aim to provide workshops that inspire you to discover something new for yourself. Whether you are a new artist, a professional or anyone else wanting to make art we aim to provide a safe, inspiring space for your art making and learning.
Everybody is welcome
All ages and abilities are welcome in the Inkling studio. We believe that diversity feeds creativity - just let us know if you’re bringing a carer or an interpreter so we can be prepared.
The Inkling Studio is upstairs, please get in touch if stairs are a problem as will be holding workshops outside the studio later in the year.
Some workshops have age restrictions so we can focus on different projects.
Good tools make great art
Have you ever tried to colour-in with a cheap pencil? The colour is pale, the marks are dull and it turns art into hard work. At Inkling we believe in using the best materials we can afford – pencils and paints that make bold marks and spark your imagination, crisp paper that lovingly works with you rather than tearing and crumpling.
We work with the tools and techniques that we use ourselves in our own arts practice. All of our materials are good quality, responsive and inspiring. For our children’s workshops we use age-appropriate free or cheap (but good) materials so that you can get more of them to use if you enjoyed them.
We’d love to meet you, let’s make some amazing things together.
All Inkling staff have Working With Children Checks. We are happy to provide you with a copy.

Samantha Hughes
Director of Inkling Arts
Sam writes and illustrates in a sunny studio in Fremantle with two naughty cats. She works mainly in gouache, relishing the richness of colour and fine detail it allows. Myths and fairytales fascinate her, and a touch of the fantastic can be found in most of her paintings. Sam has worked in communities across Western Australia engaging young people and teachers of all ages in storytelling, arts and book making workshops.
"I love working with children of all ages to play with stories in all their forms – from extraordinary flights of fancy to the quiet and familiar tales of home. I enjoy using various mediums to help children make their own stories grow and to give value to their experiences of the world."

Jane Barwell
Inkling Arts Specialist
Jane loves to make and draw things. She started her creative life making sculpture and then worked in the theatre painting and making all sorts of extraordinary things all over the world. She often works on big projects with children for the Fremantle Festival Parade, creating giant birds and sea creatures, submarine turtles and talking pelicans. Jane loves materials and stuff of all sorts and what we can do with it when we look at things in a different way.
“I love watching the way children make things and the fantastic ideas that they come up with when given the opportunity to experiment and play with materials.”
